Under the banner Journeys into Music – An Historical Perspective, we have traced both the sources and the development of music from medieval times up to the twentieth century, from Hildegard of Bingen to Copland, Stravinsky and Bernstein.

  • February - programme including Lalo, Faure, Satie and Tchaikovsky
  • December - Handel's "Messiah"
  • November - an all-Beethoven affair, including his Egmont Overture, the Piano Concerto No.2, a song "Adeliade", and his Symphony No.7
  • July - The programme has a distinctly "Classical" flavour, with music composed by Gluck, Mozart, JC Bach, and Haydn.
  • April 2025 - Vivaldi (Concerto in E major, Op.8/1 (RV.269) "Spring" from "The Four Seasons"); Stravinsky (Ballet Suite: Le Sacre du Printemps, 1947 version); Beethoven (Sonata in F major, for violin and piano, Op.24 "Spring"); and Schumann (Symphony No.1 in B flat major, Op.38 "Spring").
  • August - Hummel (Te Deum and Mandolin Concerto in G); Vanhal (Bassoon Concerto in G); and Haydn (3 songs from his set of Scottish Songs for William Whyte; Symphony No.92 in G, known as the 'Oxford Symphony').
  • July - Beethoven: Overture: Leonora No.3, Triple Concerto in C, and Symphony No.7 in A - one of my all-time favourite compositions!
  • June - gems of lesser known Viennese composers in Mozart's and Haydn's time
  • May - the sons of Johann Sebastian Bach
  • April - 'Springtime’; including Delius’ On hearing the first cuckoo in Spring, Beethoven’s Sonata No.5 for violin & piano, Op.24 (Spring sonata), Schumann’s Symphony No.1 in B flat,known as the "Spring Symphony and finally Arron Copland's Ballet Suite "Appalachian Spring".
  • March - Smetana’s famous Symphonic Poem “From my Fatherland – Vltava”; Mendelssohns’ Octet, opus 20; Paisiello’s Piano Concerto no.2 and Khachaturian’s Ballet Suite Gayaneh
  • February - something of a Slavik tone in the programme, consisting Smetana’s famous Symphonic Poem “From my Fatherland – Vltava”; Mendelssohns’ Octet, opus 20; Paisiello’s Piano Concerto no.2 and Khachaturian’s Ballet Suite Gayaneh
  • January 2024 - Ludwig van Beethoven: Overture: The Consecration of the House, Op.124; Piano Sonata in D major, Op.28 ("Pastoral"); Wind Octet in E flat, Op.103; Credo from the Mass in C, Op.86, and ending with his Symphony NO.2 in D, Op.36.
  • November - winter: Vivaldi’s and Haydn’s Winter; Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kijé Suite; Midnight Sleigh Ride, a jazz band adaptation of the 'Troika' movement; some Bach and more
  • October - Mozart and his fondness of the key of E flat, including a wind serenade, the Piano Concerto No.9 and his magnificent Symphony No.39. Also included wereMozart's Overture: "Die Entfurhrung aus dem Serial", following a short choral work by the 16th century composer Michael Praetorius.
  • September - Praetorius (dances from Terpsichore), Brahms (Variations & Fugue) and Stravinsky (Pulcinella).
  • August - Praetorius (dances from Terpsichore), Brahms (Variations & Fugue) and Stravinsky (Pulcinella).
  • July - Franz Joseph Haydn’s ‘Sturm und drang’ period.
  • May - Dvorak (Carnival Overture, a Serenade for Wind, Ave Maria and Symphony No.5)
  • April - Mendelssohn (Ruy Blas overture; concerto for violin and orchestra; string symphony): Schubert’s third symphony.
  • March - Tchaikovsky (Fantasy Overture, Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, String Quartet No.1 and Symphony No.5)
  • February - early British Music 1400-1700 including music composed by Bull, Byrd, Dowlad, Lawes, and Tallis.
  • January 2023 - Bach, Passacaglia and Fugue; Mozart, Credo from Mass in C minor; Beethoven, 4th symphony; Haydn, string quartet ‘The Lark’.
