The Gardening Group had a very interesting and enjoyable visit to Craichlaw Garden near Kirkcowan, which opens under Scotland's Garden Scheme.  It has been developed over the 34 years that the current owners have been married, with a formal garden divided into three "rooms" surrounded by yew hedges, next to the house, which dates back to medieval times.  The grounds are extensive, with a loch, woodland, a water garden, and an arboretum in the old walled garden.  There was some colour from rhododendrons, cherry blossom, azaleas, camellias and tulips, but our hosts recommended visiting in the summer when the herbaceous borders will be in bloom.
